Ordered by the U.S. Department of Education to reassess the qualifications of its special education teachers, the Michigan Department of Education reported in June that about half of the core classes offered to special education students in self-contained classrooms offered instruction by non-highly qualified teachers.

Even more eyebrow-raising, the research questioned whether a predominantly female teaching force is causing more boys to be labeled as behavior problems because women may struggle in handling the sometimes rambunctious nature of boys. It also questioned whether boys may respond better to a coachlike sternness found in some male teachers.

It appears I’ve offended some teachers by the post and comments on “Fifth grader is reading at 2.7 grade level. Should he be tested for Special Ed?”

Before clarifying the purpose of that article, I have a question for you: If your child was in 5th grade and reading on the 2.7 grade level, wouldn’t you be alarmed? Wouldn’t you want a research based reading program that has a proven record of success before your child falls even further behind?

The Information Age makes it possible for young people to learn much faster than our current failed bureaucracies and obsolete curriculums permit.

Follow-Up To Flu / Pneumonia Story

A recent Group Health study of 3,500 people found that those who got the vaccine had the same risk of getting pneumonia as those who weren’t vaccinated

As long as we are basing policy on fear, instead of real numbers, our policies will be built and manipulated by those in a position to benefit the most by promoting intense fear to a large percentage of the public.
