Special Needs

Great interviews this week! Jim Amick from Nordic Naturals, who is one of the show sponsors but he’s one of the show sponsors because we’ve been long time fans of Nordic Naturals Fish Oils,  joined us to tell us a little bit about fish oils and the Nordic Natural products. You hear all the time [...]

Why The IPad Matters

by Steve on 10, April, 2010

We’re hearing lots of hype about the Apple Ipad this week and I have to admit that after checking one out myself it’s a pretty impressive little tool.  The question of course is …. what kind of tool is it really? It’s easy to criticize it as just a blown up IPod, Ipod Touch,  Iphone, [...]

Great Stop Bullying Site

by Steve on 31, March, 2010

I ran across this anti-bullying website for kids and parents (primarily younger kids).  It’s got some good information on it and some scenarios that parents can work through with their kids. I especially liked that it had some good resources, book recommendations, tip sheets, etc.. Best of all there are little animated scenes that you [...]

An eight year old with dyslexia goes to school day after day and gets bullied. Bullying classmates call him stupid, dumb, pick on him …. you know the drill. One day they pull down his pants in public. Eight year old has had enough and jumps out the window of the second floor.

It’s a cool idea that I’m surprised nobody’s thought of sooner (though granted, it’s an expensive project).  A theme park for kids with special needs …..

Our interview with Dr. Peter Green from the Celiac Disease Center at Columbia University was a huge success (and a bit of a disappointment for my sister).  Lots of great information and some common myths addressed (i.e.- Can you grow out of Celiac?,  If it doesn’t hurt do you have Celiac?, etc.).  I especially liked [...]

Dentist. Not my favorite place to go. Actually, it’s one of those places that I HATE to go.  With a passion. It turns out that I’m not alone.  According to a study 80% of folks dislike going to see the dentist and for 50% of us it keeps us from keeping those regularly scheduled appointments. [...]

The Debate Over “Retarded”

by Steve on 3, March, 2010

I’m really tired of the ongoing debate that’s been raging in recent weeks about the “R” word (I guess it’s more impactful when we only use the first letter of words).  Not because I don’t agree that there is the potential for offense when the word is used or because I think it’s okay to [...]

IDEA Money To Buy Parents IPODS?

by Steve on 11, February, 2010

This one makes me furious! The idiots in the Polk county Florida school district came up with an idea to use part of their special education IDEA money on the purchase of IPOD Nano’s to be given away to special education parents who filled out a survey. The point of the survey was to evaluate [...]

MGK Radio: The Out-Of-Sync Child

by Steve on 3, February, 2010

Itchy tags. Doesn’t like socks. Won’t sit still. Always fidgeting and moving around. Sensitive to sounds. Sensitive to light. Difficult time properly using pens, pencils, etc. Could it be you’ve got an Out-Of-Sync child? These days it seems like there’s a condition for everything under the sun.  If your child (or you even) does anything [...]
